Rising fuel prices and terrible weather during this winter’s holiday season didn’t make it easy, but UPS managed to boost fourth-quarter profits almost 50% over last year. The company also is taking steps to reduce its dependence on volatile fuel prices, announcing this February, for example, that it plans to add about 48 trucks fueled by liquefied natural gas to its fleet. UPS will add more, it says, if the country’s natural gas infrastructure improves. —S.D.source
